A number of companies assess candidates’ ability to succeed in their environment and analyse if they will fit the company’s culture. Behavioural interviews are also used to decide the level, so it’s important for candidates to prepare well for this interview.
I have interviewed a number of candidates who came under-prepared to the behavioural interview and they were trying to come up with answers and make up situations on the spot. I have also done this in the past. This usually leads to giving confusing, unintelligible responses, which doesn’t serve the candidate well.
It’s important to be honest in your answers, but practising them helps you build a coherent reply and organise them well.
Most tech companies have a set of core values or principles and they are trying to figure out how you align with them based on your past experiences. While it is possible that you may not have encountered a certain scenario in the past, most questions are posed in such a way that candidates with some work experience would have come across something similar in the past and a lack of example could be a negative signal for senior candidates.
It’s vital to do your research about the company before the interview.
