About Lesson
Memory as Dual Processes: Learning depends on both storing and retrieving information.
Three Steps of Memory Formation:
- Encoding: Information enters memory through sensory input, strengthened by attention, sensory engagement, and emotional connection.
- Storing: Memory storage varies by type: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
- Retrieval: Retrieving stored information solidifies memory. This can happen through recall (without cues), recognition (with cues), or relearning (the least effective form).
Learning Activity:
Identify different types of memories (e.g., short-term vs. long-term) based on recent experiences. Reflect on what you remember in detail and why, noticing how attention, sensory input, and emotion play a role.
