Why Does Greenland Look So Big on Maps? Mercator Explained

The Mercator projection turns a curved surface into a rectangle while preserving local angles, which made it valuable for navigation. The cost is severe area distortion towards the poles.

A globe cannot lie flat

A map projection converts positions on a curved Earth to a flat surface. No projection can preserve area, shape, distance and direction everywhere at once.

What Mercator preserves

Mercator preserves local angles, so a constant compass bearing appears as a straight line. That is genuinely useful for navigation.

What Mercator stretches

Its scale increases away from the equator. Greenland therefore appears comparable with Africa on some maps even though Africa has roughly fourteen times its area.

Is the Mercator map wrong?

It is not useless or simply incorrect. It is a projection designed to preserve local direction and shape, not relative area across the whole world.

Why not use one perfectly accurate world map?

Because a curved surface cannot be flattened without distortion. Different projections preserve different properties for different purposes.
